Samsung crammed a heck of a lot into its hour-long Galaxy S4 launch; plenty of terrible skits and many a shrug inducing feature, but – somewhat surprisingly – no mention of wireless charging.
Well, turns out the Samsung Galaxy S4 will get wireless charging after all, as confirmed by Qi and the rapidly expanding Wireless Power Consortium.
If you’ve been following wireless power developments (seriously, who hasn’t?), you might recall Qualcomm and Samsung teaming up to form the Alliance for Wireless Power.
Back in May 2012, a press release promised “wireless power transfer technology that provides spatial freedom for charging”.
As such, it’s interesting to see Samsung siding with Qi for the Galaxy S4’s wireless charging feature.
Qi beams: “The Galaxy S4 is the latest addition to the rapidly expanding Qi ecosystem of mobile devices, charging accessories, charging locations, and consumer electronics with an installed base of more than 15 million units.
“The new Samsung Galaxy S4 uses the Qi wireless charging standard in its optional back battery cover and wireless charging pad accessories, as demonstrated at Samsung Unpacked 2013.” Say what? Did we miss something?
No mention of Samsung Galaxy S4 wireless charging price or availability at this stage, but at least it’s definitely happening. Y’know, if you like that kinda thing.
