Samsung Galaxy S5 pictured in detail ahead of tonight's MWC 2014 launchWe're just a few hours away now from Samsung's Unpacked5 launch event at MWC 2014, and we're finally seeing some decent pics of the expected star of the show – the Galaxy S5.

A bunch of images have hit Twitter showing various aspects of the Galaxy S5 in clear detail, including this shot showing the S5 sandwiched between the Galaxy Note 3 and the existing Galaxy S4.

In total we make it 11 different images of the incoming Galaxy S5 that have been posted by @SaudiAndroid. And aside from obviously showing the general look of what we can expect from the fifth iteration of Samsung's flagship smartphone, there are a few specifics that are worth pointing out.

First of all is the rear cover, which as opposed to the smooth plastic finish Samsung has typically favoured in the past, this time Sammy has gone with a kind of perforated finish and what seems like a more textured material.

But it's clearly still a plastic-based shell, and there's no evidence in the images of any alternative variant with a metal case, as has been rumoured. In fact, @SaudiAndroid reckons no such version exists.

And lastly, we see confirmation of a couple of features, namely the Galaxy S5's Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) video recording ability, and the Finger Scanner (as in fingerprint scanner).

As for the rest, expect the 5.2in display, Exynos eight-core/2.5GHz quad-core processor options, 3GB of RAM, 20MP camera, 3000mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat to be confirmed in Lewis' coverage of the Unpacked5 event, which starts at 7pm UK time.

What's to say? The success of the Galaxy range shows that hardware design doesn't seem to be anywhere near the top of people's list of criteria by which they choose their phones. They are all ugly imho... No mistake - I like the Note 2 and 3, but "pretty" doesn't come to mind. And if this photo is real, then they continue the line... No harm, I guess. Most phones end up in cases.

That S5 looks a lot like a black Note 2.

I'd describe the design of the Galaxy series of phones as "functional". It's inoffensive and gets to job done, but I don't think anyone would describe them as pretty. As you say, Jan, most phones end up in a case so the material they're made out of and, to a lesser extent, their design don't really matter.

One thing that made me despair last year was how many people raved about the HTC One based on how it felt in the hand, totally ignoring the fact most of the (about 4) units sold would end up in a plastic case of some variety.
