Stupid question, but: is your internal memory full?
Other stupid question: have you tried your sim in another phone?

Phone is quite new and not much on it!
Taken SIM out and put it back in but not tried in other phone. Might try that!

Check if you installed any other messaging app. For example Hangouts. Latest android only supports a single messaging app, while all others don't seem to display messages properly. You can choose which messaging app will be primary, while all others will not work anymore.

Another thing to try is to install Hangouts and set it as default messaging app. It will ask you if you want to do it after opening it for the first time. Then try again sending/receiving.

Yep, not sure if this is a bug of Android 4.4.x. Looks like primary messaging app gets exclusive access to SMS storage and all others get locked out.
Could be a security thing as you preventing anything unauthorized from reading SMS.

Makes sense...odd for Android :p

New phone Galaxy 5 mini on O2 - few days old. Suddenly stopped receiving texts. Emails & Calls OK. Tried back-up and restore. Do not want to do a factory restore and Im not sure how to get all my contacts back. Removing Sim card seems technically drastic for me to attempt. Any guru available?

Check what SMS app is your default - it may have got screwed and the 'expected' SMS app idn't getting them. e.h. Hangounts v Samsung builtin Text app
