I’m all about the yeas and nays this week, having already weighed up the likelihood of the Samsung Galaxy S5 launch going down at Unpacked5 on February 24. Conclusion: probably.
Here I’m looking at some of the rumoured Samsung Galaxy S5 specs, and giving them either a thumbs-up, or a well-deserved poke in the eye.
See, even with as little as 10 days to go at the time of writing, Samsung Galaxy S5 specs are very much up in the air. Part of the problem is that there might well be two different models. Which brings me to my first point.
Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: 2K display?
By the sounds of it, both of those rumours are on the money, with a Samsung Galaxy S5 Standard and Premium/Prime tipped to turn up in Barcelona, the latter obviously having more impressive specs, including – we’re told – a 2K display.
Many people are still debating the merits of 1080p on a relatively small display, but 2K HD seems to be the way we’re going this year, with LG, Oppo and Nokia all seemingly on board.
Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: 20MP rear camera?
It doesn’t look like we’ve yet relayed the recent rumour of Samsung Galaxy S5 specs including a 20MP rear camera, so here’s the dealio.
Essentially, Dutch-language site SamsungGalaxyS5.nl claims to have received some retail packaging (provided by an “anonymous tipster”), supposedly revealing Samsung Galaxy S5 specs in all their glory.
One of the standout claims is a 20MP rear camera, but even the site gives “doubts to the authenticity”. Us too.
At present, we have the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 on 13MP, and the Galaxy S4 Zoom topping the Sammo charts on 16MP.
Last December, we were told Samsung was working on its inevitable 20MP rear camera, but that it wasn’t expected until the second half of space year 2014AD. As such, it’ll almost certainly debut in something like the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, or maybe the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom.
Verdict: poke in the eye.
Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor?
Inevitably the Samsung Galaxy S5 will come rocking various processors, depending on region and LTE compatibility and all that.
But should we pay much attention to the claim that Samsung Galaxy S5 specs might include the spanking new Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor?
The presumably lightning fast processor was unveiled back in November 2013, though it’s yet to make an appearance. Back then we were told it’d arrive “by the first half of 2014”, and really; Qualcomm couldn’t pick a more high-profile launch partner than the Samsung Galaxy S5.
We’re dubious about this one, however, as Qualcomm told Trusted Reviews a few weeks ago: “In November we announced Snapdragon 805, the next-generation of 800. We’ve said it will launch mid-year.”
But tipping the scales back the other way, in favour of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805, the Oppo Find 7 is launching in mid-March, and it’s thought to have the latest QS chip. Confused.org.net.
Verdict: a tentative poke in the eye.
Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: fingerprint scanner?
With loads of smartphone flagships rocking super-fast processors and gigantic, high-resolution displays, the question is: how to stand out?
Well, the iPhone 5s (left) arrived with a fingerprint scanner last year, and the Samsung Galaxy S5 might well follow suit.
The notion of a Samsung Galaxy S5 fingerprint scanner is constantly being “confirmed” and refuted, and the likelihood of two different models further complicates things: the Premium model might have a fingerprint scanner and the Standard might not, for example.
Interestingly, while the iPhone 5s fingerprint scanner sits below the display, and while the HTC One Max shoves it on the back, Samsung’s inevitable fingerprint scanner is tipped to come built into the display.
Gah, we’re really on the fence with this one…
Verdict: a tentative thumbs-up.
Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: eye-tracking?
Lovely Lee Young Hee, Samsung’s VP of mobile stuff, recently revealed: “Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology. We are studying the possibility but can’t really say whether we will have it or not on the S5.”
However, the technology is relatively nascent, and there are thought to be problems with eye-tracking under certain conditions. Er, such as darkness.
An anonymous source of The Korea Herald rants: “Who would want to put their handset up close to their eyes for authentication in places like movie theaters and bed, or even while they are driving?”
Nah, we’re not sold on this one at all.
Verdict: poke in the eye.
Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: metal body?
Here's another one that's constantly being proposed and denied on what feels like a daily basis: Samsung Galaxy S5 specs will include - perhaps most notably - a metal body.
The logic here is that the HTC One was almost unanimously hailed as a sexy mother fugger with its aluminium body, while the Samsung Galaxy S4 was largely denounced as a same-old, uninspiring hunk of plastic.
Again, we're not too sure what to think here, and the notion of a super-premium Samsung Galaxy F launching later in the year muddies the water yet more. Will the Samsung Galaxy F be the metal one? Maybe.
Verdict: poke in the eye.
Samsung Galaxy S5 specs will probably include a 2K display and maybe a fingerprint scanner.
Do not expect Samsung Galaxy S5 specs to include a 20MP rear camera, Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, metal body, or eye-tracking technology.
We should totally revisit this feature on February 24 and give me a score out of 6. Exciting.
