Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: was I right? And where’s the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime?

Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: was I right? And where’s the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime?Ten days ago I penned Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: dissected, essentially pulling a bunch of rumours together and weighing up the likelihood of each of them bearing fruit.

Well, for better or worse, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is now a reality, and I’m pleased to say that I was right! Well, mostly. And on a related note, I’m wondering: where the heck is the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime? We were promised two phones, rumour mill. TWO PHONES.

Let’s break this down spec by spec, as I did in the aforementioned feature.

Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: 2K display?

I said: yes!

Verdict: wrong!

This is actually the only point where I went wrong, but in my defense the picture painted by the rumour mill suggested we’d see a 1080p Samsung Galaxy S5 (right enough) and a Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime/Premium with a 2K HD display.

Alas, as it stands, there’s only a 1080p Samsung Galaxy S5, so my faith in a 2K HD model was clearly misplaced.

Having said that, I reckon there will be an enhanced model at a later date, with a 2K HD display and perhaps a metal body. That being the case, you have to wonder when they’d announce such a model: before the Samsung Galaxy S5 release date – at the risk of cannibalising sales, or after April 11 with the risk of upsetting S5 owners.

Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: was I right? And where’s the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime?Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: 20MP rear camera?

I said: no!

Verdict: right!

Yeah, as I was saying, too early for Samsung’s 20MP rear camera. It’s tipped for release in the second half of 2014, which could mean a Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime, Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom, or perhaps the inevitable Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

Incidentally, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has a 16MP rear camera.

Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor?

I said: no!

Verdict: right!

Er, actually, am I right? The Samsung Galaxy S5 processor hasn’t been specified yet as far as I can tell, but it’s likely too early for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805.

Heck, the Sony Xperia Z2 has the spanking new Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, and Qualcomm themselves say the QS805 won’t appear until the middle of the year.

Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: fingerprint scanner?

I said: yes!

Verdict: right!

Yep, there is indeed a fingerprint scanner on the Samsung Galaxy S5. Samsung didn’t go into too much detail at the press conference, but you’ll be able to further lock down personal content with the fingerprint scanner.

It’s not yet clear if the Samsung Galaxy S5 fingerprint scanner can be used to launch individual applications.

Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: was I right? And where’s the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime?Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: eye-tracking?

I said: no!

Verdict: right!

To be fair, I don’t think anyone was realistically expecting Samsung Galaxy S5 specs to include eye-tracking technology. An easy point for me.

Samsung Galaxy S5 specs: metal body?

I said: no!

Verdict: right!

This is a slightly confusing one in the sense that the Samsung Galaxy S5 ain’t metal. That much is clear.

However, I’m starting to think that maybe the Samsung Galaxy S5 Premium/Prime (or whatever it’s called) might in fact be metal. At this stage, it would really have to be significantly different from the bog standard model to make sense.

Having said that, we are talking about Samsung, so anything’s possible.

Conclusion

Five out of six ain’t bad. Indeed, the 2K HD thing is kinda sorta up in the air, and could materialise in a subsequent Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime launch. Would it be too much to have a Samsung Galaxy S5, a Galaxy S5 Prime and a Galaxy Note 4 on offer at the same time? Intriguing.

It’s not yet clear if the Samsung Galaxy S5 fingerprint scanner can be used to launch individual applications. It isn't? They already published an SDK for apps to utilise the scanner. Also, Samsung want you to shop with thing...
However: no word regarding security. Where's the image stored etc... But I guess the dynamic duo of Greenwald and Snowden will tell us in a year or so*** (***pending book deals etc...)

Sorry, I didn't explain myself very well there :p

I meant the thing whereby your pinkie might correspond to Facebook, your thumb to Whatsapp, your other pinkie to Chrome...
