Why does Samsung insist on using KIES?

Why does Samsung insist on using KIES for updates? What's the point? Why not just do OTA?

The 1 billion dollar question.
It's not just for updates - KIES sucks so badly, I cannot believe the same company makes the excellent phones, invented Bada etc etc...
I can understand why some companies insist on firmware updates via PC, though. Losing battery juice or the data connection during an update could end in tears. Personally, I never update OTA - with the exception of my N9 - there is no easy other way.

But again... the bigger question imho is: WHY Kies at all? It is without a doubt one of the 3 worst pieces of software on any platform.
