Samsung to supply A6 chip for iPad 3?

Samsung to supply A6 chip for iPad 3?With the twenty-odd patent disputes currently being fought across the globe, it’s easy to forget that Apple is still one of Samsung’s biggest clients – second only to numero uno Sony.

As a result, Apple’s iGadgets are full of Sammy components. The ironing is delicious (a million bonus points if you get the reference).

It’s not exactly the easiest thing to change suppliers on a whim, as much as Apple might like to, and as such the bizarre Sample/Apsung relationship looks set to continue for the foreseeable future.

Indeed, an anonymous source has been telling the Korea Times that Samsung will provide the A6 chip for the iPad 3.

Mr Anonymous said: “Apple has been in talks with Samsung over shipment of its A6 quad-core mobile processor (AP) chips to be used in the next iPhone. It appears that Apple clearly has concluded that Samsung remains a critical business partner.

“Samsung Electronics will apply its advanced 28-nanometer processing technology to produce qualified A6 mobile APs. TSMC will provide customized chips with designs from Apple, however, the volume will be very small.”

After the iPhone 5 debacle, I’m officially taking all iPad 3 stories with a generous pinch of salt. This one ain’t too far fetched though, so maybe just a sprinkle.

Correct me if I am wrong but it seems to me that so far all the lawsuits that have been banded around in the apple vs samsung battle have all been going apples way (with the tab being banned from Australia and restricted sales in Europe at one point) so it seems amazing that samsung would "help" Apple in this way by providing them with the leading edge chip for their top competitor.

Mind you stranger things happen in coporate business...

It's probably a different arm of the business, but I for one would be interested to see income from Samsung's own phones vs income from the iP*** stuff

Oh and Lewis, you watch too much Simpsons.
So do I.

@ Stelph. Samsung produce a "leading edge chip" for their top competitor and produce a "leading edge '+1' chip" for themselves with the lessons learned from producing the A6 on Apple's bill?

It is a different division. The need for Apple to buy in practically all it's components (even from hated rivals) should be of note to their fanboys.

The next iPad is also rumoured to use Samsung displays too.
