And there we thought Nokia was Microsoft's new best friend. Turns out that behind Stephen Elop's back his one-time boss Steve Ballmer has been courting another mobile hardware player just as eagerly: Samsung.
Ironically, it seems that the Nokia deal is the very reason Microsoft is working so hard to keep its other WinPho partners onside. Much more talk of special relationships and they may be tempted to jump ships.
WMPowerUser has spotted a job posting for what appears to be a special liaison between Microsoft and Samsung whose job it will be to “jointly develop and manage the planning of the product portfolio and experiences for Windows Phone handsets along with Samsung”.
More significantly, the person in question will “identify opportunities in the smartphone market through competitive analysis, segmentation and consumer insights and partner with Samsung to address these market segments”.
In other words, Microsoft is giving Samsung the inside track to fill the biggest gaps in the market itself, with its full support and permission.
We wonder what Stephen Elop is thinking right now...
