Are sat nav and GPS the same thing?

Sorry don't know much about phones! Are they the same thing and do they use data???

You need GPS receiver to use Sat Nav software. Sat Nav requires maps to show you where you are. GPS receiver only provides your coordinates.
Depending on software that is being used you can have maps pre-installed or downloaded on the fly. If maps are not pre-installed with software you need to use data to download them. Google Maps is one such example - it will always fetch maps from Google servers. Sygic and CoPilot pre-install map on the phone and do not require internet connection.
