Scurvy Scallywags iOS review

Scurvy Scallywags iOS reviewLooking back, games with a maritime theme tend to rub me up the wrong way for some reason. In particular I’m thinking of Crazy Fishes and Grumble&Piccolo’s Fishing Trip. Sigh.

Scurvy Scallywags is yet another fish-filled match-three game, and while I initially rolled my eyes in disbelief, it’s actually not that bad (great quote for the App Store listing, eh?).

The recent big match-three hit was of course the ultra-addictive wallet-siphoning Candy Crush Saga. Scurvy Scallywags looks to differentiate itself as a “musical match-3 RPG”, with the pirate protagonist right in the thick of the action.

One thing I immediately enjoyed about Scurvy Scallywags is that the pieces are relevant; it’s not just a case of matching arbitrary items.

For example, gold pieces give you – yes – gold, while matching the purple swords raises your attack. Your attack level is vital for taking on enemies, as you can only defeat those with a lower rating than yourself.

As for gold, it can be used to buy all sorts of stuff in the burgeoning Scurvy Scallywags store, including clothes (which can boost attributes), ships, and – of course – power-ups.

Among other things, you can purr-chase the ability to leap to the nearest quest item (instead of skilfully manoeuvring it towards your little guy), a gun with which to blast enemies, and a magic thingamajig that turns the most popular piece to gold.

Scurvy Scallywags iOS reviewAnd that’s Scurvy Scallywags in a nutshell. The “RPG” element isn’t hugely deep; it’s not like you’ll be poring over stats for 30 minutes before you launch into action. In fact, it’s no more RPG than, say, Temple Run 2, or indeed any other game on the App Store these days. Levelling up and investing in stuff is par for the course.

It’s worth noting, too, that Scurvy Scallywags isn’t much of a looker, and occasionally resembles touchscreen vomit – depending on the pieces in play on each level.

That said, Scurvy Scallywags is still quite enjoyable, and the little cut scenes are mildly amusing. And I repeatedly found myself thinking: ‘Must go write this review. Maybe just one more level…’ That can only be a good sign.

  • Oddly moreish
  • Lots of stuff in the shop
  • It’s not Candy Crush

  • Looks kinda pants
  • The RPG claims are a little exaggerated
  • It’s not Candy Crush
