How to set up email on Android?

I'm trying to use the official Android email app, but it's really, really confusing.

I'm on hotmail, and after you input your email address and password, it asks you "what account is this?" and then you have to fill a lot of other stuff that's way too technical.

I've tried looking up help on the internet, but most of it is for the old Gingerbread email app, and is outdated.

Will someone who's done this before please help me?

Not to sound daft: did you have an active, working connection while you tried to set up your account? Your address and password oughta be enough.
Also: have you used said hotmail account on another phone before? Did it work?

What phone and network are you on? And incidentally: during your attempts, were you on 3G or on a WiFi connection?

Sorry, but I don't think you understand. This is what I'm talking about -

I press next and it says "checking incoming settings" and then "couldn't open connection to server".

Oops - don't think that link works. Try this one

Instead of pop3 TRY:

user: [email protected] (or .com if that is so)
your pwd

Use SSL => On
Authentication: Password
Server Port: 993

If that doesn't work, you might find a support forum for your network, and ask there....

another way to do it is to get Gmail to fetch it.

Open Gmail on your desktop, click on the Settings Gear, then choose Settings
then along the tabs you see one that says "Accounts & Import"
the you see "Check mail from other accounts (using POP3):"
Choose this and enter your address & Gmail does the rest of the work.

Mine is for my old Hotmail account so I make it delete from the original server and skip my Inbox.

In my opinion, it's the nicest way to get email on from other accounts on Android.

You don't need an account to comment. Just enter your email address. We'll keep it private.
