Can I set an mp3 as my iPhone ringtone for free?

Is there any way to set a song as my iPhone ringtone without paying for an app?

Convert the MP3 of the song or clip you want to an apple format *.m4a using iTunes. You can do this by right clicking the MP3 and 'convert to AAC'.
Then rename it as *.M4R. (NOT in iTunes and also ignore any warnings about changing the file type.)
Double click this new file and it will get added to the ringtones folder in the iTunes library.
Plug in your phone and Sync the ringtones.

Job done.

more hassle then its worth tbh, im currently on iphone 4, had a satio previously, and had each gen of ipod touch since launch (minus 4th gen) and well, fell into the iSheep crowd.

Wish i read more into things, but well to be fair, you wouldnt expect 'the premium' phone to be so restricted, hell, back in the day my SE K750i could set mp3's as ringtones without the hassle of editing on the computer, then again near enough every phone can do this right now, but the iphone. £600 for a phone that you have a limited choice of ringtones? Reliant SOLEY on itunes for media transfer, and even then if you delete from your pc, when you sync, you lose it from phone.

To be blunt, Marketing is a very powerful thing when you get it right
