When it comes to future devices and technologies, names are important. They give us something to talk about, a hanger to drape our wild theories and imaginings on.
So pay attention, you Windows Phone types (and Nokia fans). Once Windows Phone Mango is over and done with, the next update to WinPho will be the newly christened Tango, which will be a stop-gap before the next big update – Apollo.
There's no question that the whole naming thing must be one of the best bits about working on future tech. Just to know that you were the one who chose the name of the next version of Android, or the latest twist on Samsung's Galaxy of smartphones must be a pretty cool feeling.
Anyway, getting back to Windows Phone. The name Apollo has been doing the rounds for a while now, and consensus remains that it will be a major step forward for the platform, and will more than likely be numbered Windows Phone 8.
But according to DigiTimes, there's another update coming before that, and it will go by the name of Tango. That's all we have to go on for now, but we'll be keeping our ears open for more details once all this Mango business dies down a little.
Now we don't want to be too critical here, but really, Microsoft: going from Mango to Tango? Surely you can do better. May as well change Apollo's name to Fandango and be done with it...
