Do you get less signal in a crowded place?

I was at a gig last night and my signal was almost non-existent.
I wondered: does being in a really packed, crowded place lessen your phone signal?

Yes, especially when all those people carry mobiles, too.
Reviewers of the Sony QX10 (the camera lens that connects to smartphones via wifi) found that the camera was more or less useless in crowded places with a lot of mobile and wifi use - such as football stadiums etc.... Though that is wifi-related the effect is similar. Plus, in your scenario, a crowd of people literally forms a fatty watery wall of flesh.
