What does SIM free mean?

Maybe a stupid question! But does SIM free mean the phone doesn’t have a tariff or network? Do I have to get a SIM card separately?

Pretty much what you've said - sim free means it doesn't come with a sim card and it isn't locked to any specific network :) You'd need to get a sim card seperately. Sim free phones generally don't come with any sort of network branding, which is a positive point for many people.
