What's the best simple eReader?

What's the best eReader simply for reading books? Doesn't need to be colour or have a browser or anything, but 3G might be handy. Ta!

Kindle or Kobo. The Wifi versions. In a year I haven't managed to connect our Kindle DX to a 3G network for longer than 3 seconds :p

Kindle, IMO. My OH has one and it's great (the 3G works fine on hers).

Uses vodafone over here doesn't it? So could see why it could be flakey.
Kobo touch is pretty good, Kindle easier if you buy books at amazon though...

Kindle.

Have had both the kindle and the Kobi touch, and whilst the kobi is cheaper and is ok, the kindle feels better made. The kindles screen is better quality and scrolls smoother too.

And there's always "mobi" files available from certain sources for free that are easy to add to the Kindle so no real worry about books being expensive for it.

Those 'certain sources' (we're talking 'legal', of course...) cover the Kobo, too, of course ;)
I too would prefer the Kindle. More accessories. And non-mobi files can be easily converted with Calibre (PC, Mac OS, Linux).

Another good one is the PocketBook Touch. It's a tad more expensive than the Kindle Touch, but when I used one I had the impression it was much faster & , well, smoother... http://www.pocketbook-int.com/us/products/pocketbook-touch

A disadvantage of sorts is that, although it uses Pearl eInk, the screen is glass covered to provide capacitive multitouch...
So you get a bit more glare outdoors.
Here are the specs http://www.pocketbook-int.com/us/products/pocketbook-touch

More accessories? Like what, only one I can think of the ludicrously expensive case with light. Ordinary cases fit either as practically same size. Thinking on lights if not in a hurry the lit ones should be appearing before christmas.
I've read that the screens are actually the same and made in the same factory but not checked the veracity of that.

If I was getting one atm I'd likely go for this though, fond memories of iriver from their old mp3 players. Description is a bit wrong in places on the ebay page though. Can't imagine mention of video is right and battery run time confused with charge time.
ebay item number 360474532446

You're right re the eInk screens afaik. That's why there are basically just 3 sizes with whatever company you go for.
Well, as to accessories: some people are big into cases. And there really is a wider range for Kindles, esp'ly when you want one that REALLY fits. For me it wouldn't be a dealbreaker, though. Also: it IS easier to get a genuine Kindle charger. Also, there are actual firmware hacks and tweaks for the Kindle 'OS'... hehehe

It's 1mm difference I think oO, so Kindle 4g case likely fits Kobo Touch better than Kindle Touch ;)
Yeah I'm using a kindle charger lol, the cable length is nice. Picked one up when they had an offer on, way before buying an ereader tbh.
I think hacking it goes against simplicity ;)
Latest Sony is rather nice, easier to use with libraries iirc too

Nah, pondlife... that's half true. But there are proper fitting hardshell cases for Kindles where a mm difference means: sorry, f*ck off. I hate those covers where the bezel is covered and your pinkies interfere with the case instead of the screen... In that regard, Kindle accessories rule. Vorsprung Durch Präzision as we say in Germany :p

Pondlife  Jul. 24, 2012 at 23:50

Yeah all those german engineered made in China cases, yeah right.

Blimey just seen the price for the Amazon charger in the new argos book, anyone paying £16.99 for it needs parting from their money

matt101101 / MOD  Jul. 24, 2012 at 23:52

Germany make fantastic sausages, beer and cars. I'm yet to be convinced on their eBook reader cover production, credentials :p.

Pondlife  Jul. 24, 2012 at 23:56

I'm not convinced about their sausages or beer tbh.
Still in shock over amazon charger price. Sure I paid £2.19, was wrong a massive £3.49 :(

matt101101 / MOD  Jul. 25, 2012 at 00:07

To be honest, I guess the sausages and the beer are just my opinion, only the cars are really of undeniable quality :p. £16.99 for what's just a basic MicroUSB charger, that's madness.

i would suggest a nexus 7...

For reading books, the Kindle beats the Nexus 7, hands down. There's also no 3G version of the Nexus 7, and the OP said 3G would be handy.

Yeah it's definitely not worth the money for the 3g kindle now though, really overpriced

It's currently the most popular device on the XDA forums, so you're not alone in owning one. Is it good, btw?

I doubt you are alone seeing as they can't keep them in shops for long.

Being German, it's probably better made than the Kindle itself :p.
