How does Simplicity o2 Pay & Go work?

I am happy with my current phone, but my contract is coming to an end. A friend is on Simplicity with o2, but I don't really understand how it works. Is it really unlimited texts?

You can read the full T&Cs here on o2, but they're pretty wordy.

I read somewhere that it was 12000 texts, so you might as well call that unlimited!

Basically, you get an anniversary date each month, when you must top up your phone. They text you 4 days before to remind you. You top up the required amount, and they debit the amount from your topup, depending on which deal you want (£5, £10, etc). Then you get an allowance which you can use on your phone. For example, say you are on the £5 package, and you top up your phone with £10. They'd take £5, and you keep the other £5 credit. It can even roll over to the next month, it's your credit.

There are a few deals to choose from, whether you want call time and data too.
