An oddly soundless video showing Skype for iPad in action recently leaked on YouTube, semi-confirming that iPad users will get a version of the app specifically developed for the big screen.
Until now, iPad users have had to make do with the iPhone version, stretching it from the intended 3.5in display to 10in. Euch. However, Rick Osterloh, Skype’s VP of Consumer and Product Design has confirmed that yucky stretch-o-vision will soon be a thing of the past.
An exact release date wasn’t forthcoming, but Osterloch revealed that Skype for iPad has been in testing for “a few months”.
Rick told TUAW that Skype on the iPhone had been a major success, with "a userbase that doubled in just a month's time." He expects the iPad version will enjoy “a similar success."
When asked if Skype might be stepping on Facetime’s toes, Rick said that Apple had in fact “been super supportive." Bless.
Should we expect to see an army of iPad 2 users holding their tablets aloft as they make Skype video calls on crowded trains? Er, probably not.
