Slice It iPhone review

Slice It iPhone reviewSlice It is another one of those games that works perfectly on the iPhone. Simple idea? Check. Good use of the touchscreen? Check. Ideal in short bursts? Check. Infuriating as hell and almost possible to put down? Double check.

In each stage of Slice It, you have a fixed amount of slices to cut a shape into a target number of pieces. For example, faced with a circle, four slices, and a target of eight pieces, you simply cut it like you would a pizza. Indeed, the on-screen hint asks: “Have you sliced a pizza before?” Simple, right?

Slice It starts off easy enough, but the difficulty soon ramps up. The aim is to make each piece roughly the same size. If they’re not similar enough, you fail. If you don’t use up all your slices, you fail. If you cut too many pieces, you fail. Later on there are barriers that can’t be sliced through.

A star rating is awarded after each stage, from one to five. Each time you get five stars, you’re awarded with a hint. The hints are really invaluable. I wouldn’t normally use in-game tips, but they don’t reveal the entire the solution; more like a gentle push in the right direction. If you’re a man (or woman) of unrelenting principle, you can always skip the level and come back to it later.

Slice It supports multi-touch, so it’s easy to make minute adjustments for precise cuts. There’s also an Undo button, so you can skip back a few steps and change your plan of attack.

We’re up to Slice It 1.5.1 now, with 180+ stages and the promise of more to come. At 59p, it’s well worth the moolah. If you’re not convinced, check out the free version – Slice It Begins – with 15 stages to whet your appetitite.

  • Easy to pick up
  • Nice use of multi-touch
  • 180+ levels

  • Really, incredibly hard
  • Quite samey after while
  • Have I mentioned how hard it is?

Summary: Slice It is another simple idea, brilliantly executed on the iPhone. Just cut the shapes into similarly-sized pieces. Easy. But, at the same time, brain-meltingly difficult.

Compatibility: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.

Can't believe I'm commenting on this, but hey... the game's actually not bad, but it would profit from a stylus and larger screen.

I love Slice It. It's better than most other "puzzle" games on the App Store. Getting 5 stars on each level is hard, but at least when you do it, you get a "hint" that you can use to help with harder levels. Bank them all up and some of the offensively difficult levels can be made much easier.

This game really, really made me want an iPad. Bad, bad game!
