What do you mean by "not tactile enough"?
The screen's responsiveness?
Anyho - if the iPthone's too big, how about a Sony Ericsson Ray or a Nokia 700(it comes with Belle, so it's a bit more modern UI-wise than older Symbian devices)

Sony Erricson Xperia Ray
Nokia 500/700

Lol am guessing the "cut everyone off" is to do with way HTC implement the lock screen with slide down to unlock and answer or slide to decline. - That near enough crosses out HTC from the equation unless u download a new unlock app and change it.

At the price this seems like a good deal:

But if I was in your shoes, I'll be very interested in this:

As its fairly newish, cheap and has a 1Ghz processor so does Adobe flash content.

By tactile I mean that I carry a laptop most days and need to use one hand to answer phone, I find the Iphone to slippery and smooth for one handed phone usage and putting it in some form of gel case ruins the look of the phone
I am now seriously looking at the Sony Xperia Ra

Used the Sony Ericsson Ray for about 10 minutes. Felt really nice; no lag - and surprisingly, typing on the smallish screen was fairly. Good. Nice little surprise.
