Hi, I'm looking to buy my father in law a new phone for his birthday. He's a bit of a technophobe and as an ex-rugby player, he has big fingers. Was thinking Wildfire S which you can still get at about £100... any suggestions?

I wouldn't recommend the wildfire s or the galaxy ace to anyone.
Tbh if he's that technophobic a cheap wp7 phone might be better bet. The rapidly price dropping Nokia 800 might be that cheap soon enough if not the 710 could be available still. Yep they won't get wp8 but the wildfire s and galaxy ace wouldn't be getting any updates either.

I'd go with pondlife's recommendation - WP is pretty straightforward. Only thing is: those 2 phones have 3.5in screens...for a big-pawed rugger something bigger might be better.
Which, for a hundred bucks sim-free, means the 4in Huawei G300...
Then again, the WP onscreen keyboard is pretty good.

Thought the Nokia 800 was 4 inch, oops. 3.5 is same size as the wildfire s anyway.
See we were both wrong 800 and 710 are 3.7"
The block style os seems suited to large fingers too.
I did think about the G300 but wasn't sure about how it would go across as a gift. I would personally say it's far better than the wildfire s and ace though.
Is my insomnia contagious?

Yes,the G300 looks a bit unfancy.
Ah, yes, you're right - the Nokias are 3.7 inches, of course. The 800 has the same body as the N9 which has a 3.9in screen... though that is questionable in real life, because a tad of that is swipe-responsive 'bezel'...
