Which smartphone is best for texting?

Which smartphone has the best keyboard for texting? I've read good things about the Samsung Galaxy S II with Swype.

Keyboard that come with the phone is irrelevant. There are much better alternatives on market than any stock keyboard currently available - example: SlideIT Keyboard and SwiftKey X.

What you should be looking at is screen size. Bigger screen = bigger keys, which are easier to hit. Depending on your typing style this should be only thing that matters. SwiftKey X is customizable allowing you to select keys.

In terms of touchscreen-only devices you're right.
If the OP was asking about hardware keypads? Blackberry Bold 9900!!! Best keypad ever. Not just phone pads either. The 9900's keypad is better than many laptops' clickers, also.

If question about physical keyboard, why reference phone that does not have one?

Hardware: Bold 9900, by a very long way, nothing comes close.

Software/Touchscreen: 4.3" with the stock HTC Keyboard IMO. The stock HTC keyboard is available as an APK file that can be installed on any Android phone from XDA.

Swype is swype is swype... SGS2 or Nokia X7 or HTC HD2... OS less relevant than screen size and responsiveness. Swype is not an Android invention ;)
