Yesterday I scribbled about the spanking new Huawei Ascend G510, an Android-powered smartphone touching down on Vodafone today for the rather wallet-friendly price of £130 (more on that price below!).
It joins a growing army of decent smartphones with reasonable price tags, and as such I figured I’d take a few hours to pen a guide featuring the best smartphones for under £150.
How will we do this? Vaguely alphabetical order? You got it! Needless to say, hit us up with a comment if I’ve forgotten anything, or if you’ve seen any particularly good deals on your travels.
HTC Desire C
There was a time when the HTC Desire was in fact the Taiwanese manufacturer’s flagship, however nowadays the Desire name means cheapness. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing (though it is annoying when HTC insists on churning out seven million minor variants of the same phone).
The HTC Desire C regularly goes for under £100. Indeed, I’m seeing it on Orange PAYG at the moment for £79.99, with an obligatory £10 top-up making the checkout price £89.99.
HTC Desire C specs include a 3.5in display (320 x 480), 600MHz Qualcomm snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB internal storage (with a microSD slot) and a 5MP rear camera.
Huawei Ascend G510
The Huawei Ascend G510 arrives today, exclusive to Vodafone, though there appears to be a little confusion over the price. Yesterday, we reported it’d sell for £130 on Vodafone PAYG, though it’s currently listed at £180.
Thankfully, over on Huawei UK’s Facebook page, the Chinese manufacturer confirms (in response to several queries): “yes, there has been some error. Thanks for flagging too. Vodafone is aware and will change. We understand 130 is correct. Apologies for the inconvenience. Thanks again.” Phew!
Huawei Ascend G510 specs include a 4.5in display (480 x 854), 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB internal storage (with a microSD slot), 5MP rear camera and a VGA front shooter.
Huawei Ascend W1
Yep, it’s another cheapish phone from Huawei, this time the Windows Phone 8-rockin’ Ascend W1.
If you’re quick, you can grab the Huawei Ascend W1 (blue) from O2 for £109.99 on PAYG. It’s currently down from £129.99.
Huawei Ascend W1 specs include a 4in display (480 x 800), 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB internal storage (with a microSD slot), 5MP rear camera and VGA front snapper. So essentially it’s a smaller Huawei Ascend G510 with Windows Phone 8 instead of Android.
Nokia Lumia 520
Another O2 PAYG /slash/ Windows Phone 8 deal, though this time we’re headed over to Carphone Warehouse (as opposed to O2 direct).
The Nokia Lumia 520 is the latest addition to the Finnish manufacturer’s Windows Phone 8 family (alongside the Nokia Lumia 720), and comes in at just under £100 i.e. £99.95. The obligatory £10 top-up brings you to £109.95 with free delivery.
Nokia Lumia 520 specs include a 4in display (480 x 800), 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB internal storage (with a microSD slot) and a 5MP rear camera.
Nokia Lumia 620
The Nokia Lumia 620 has been brawling with the Huawei Ascend W1 for a good few months now.
If you fancy the Nokia Lumia 620, definitely worth holding out for a cheeky price drop, as you stand to save a good £20-30.
Nokia Lumia 620 specs include a 3.8in display (480 x 800), 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB internal storage (with a microSD slot), 5MP rear camera and a VGA front shooter.
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2
The original Samsung Galaxy Ace proved hugely popular, and the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 appears to be doing likewise. Heck, at less than a third of the price of the Samsung Galaxy S4, it’s not surprising.
The Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 is currently going for £149.99 on O2 PAYG, though it’s worth noting that it was recently £129.99 during its Easter sale. We dare say the price will come back down again. Though if you regularly shove £20 down the drain/strippers’ pants, by all means fire in.
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 specs include a 3.8in display (480 x 800), dual-core 800MHz processor, 768MB of RAM, 4GB internal storage (with a microSD slot), 5MP rear camera and a VGA front shooter.
ZTE Blade 3
The ZTE Blade 3 joined the budget smartphone battle back in February this year, and I believe – correct me if I’m wrong here – that it’s exclusive to Virgin Mobile, where it sells for £79.99 on PAYG (including a lovely £10 top-up).
Having a quick nosey through the site, delivery appears to be an extra £7.99, so that’s £87.98 all in for your ZTE Blade 3.
ZTE Blade 3 specs include a 4in display (480 x 800), 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB internal storage (with a microSD slot), 5MP rear camera and some sort of front snapper.
