Snakes Ladders Android review

Snakes Ladders Android reviewLet’s be clear here: this isn’t Snake & Ladder, Snake & Ladders, Snake and Ladder, Snakes and Ladders 1.1... (I could go on all day). No sir, this is Snakes Ladders for Android.

One of the most recent user reviews reads: “Worst thing ive ever played. Thought it would be nostalgic, nope, it's just tragic”, however a substantial 114 of 246 people awarded it 5/5. Is Snakes Ladders really the perfect game?

You know the deal in the board game Snakes and Ladders, right? Two players take turns at rolling a six-sided die with the goal of getting from square one to 100 first.

To mix it up – rather than a balls-out race – there are both snakes (bad) and ladders (good), hence the name. If you finish your turn on a ladder, you ascend up the board; if you finish on a slippery snake, you slide down a bit.

If you’re lucky enough to roll a six, you get a bonus turn, and that’s pretty much all there is to Snakes and Ladders. Snakes Ladders ticks all, erm, three of those boxes (snakes, ladders, bonus turns), but that’s about all it does right.

For starters, the board looks absolutely hideous. See that picture above? Imagine that crammed into a tiny screen; there’s no zooming in or out. Pink and green and blue and yellow and white; Snakes Ladders looks like Snakes and Ladders-flavoured vomit.

The way the die rolls around the screen is absolutely hilarious. I honestly haven’t laughed so much in weeks. It’s like it’s possessed or something. Oh, and it feels like it takes aaages for the die to stop.

Sound? None. Just absolute silence. Not even a token beep to indicate a change in turn or whatever. Incredible stuff.

The only plus point I can think of is that there’s a two-player pass-and-play mode, so you don’t have to suffer alone.

And that’s all the time I’m willing to spend talking about Snakes Ladders.

Pros

  • The die is genuinely hilarious
  • Two-player pass-and-play

Cons

  • Looks hideous, frankly
  • No sound
  • Sloooooooooow

Summary: Snakes Ladders is a bad smartphone version of Snakes and Ladders. Avoid.
