Solitaire iOS review

Solitaire iOS reviewWhile First Person Shooters (FPSs) aren’t exactly ideal for smartphones and tablets, one thing that always feels right at home with a touch display is solitaire.

There are scores of solitaire apps on the App Store, and while I certainly can’t speak for them all, MobilityWare’s Solitaire offering is surely one of the best. It has everything you could ask for from a solitaire app, and tons more.

Hmm, where to begin? For starters, Solitaire has the usual draw one or three stuff, and Vegas scoring. But that’s par for the solitaire course.

Where Solitaire excels is in its plethora of settings. There’s a ridiculous amount of stuff going on.

You can change the backs of the cards and the playing area, using either Solitaire’s in-built offerings, or photos from your very own iOS photo album.

With the Winning Deals option, you can adjust the slider between All Random and All Winning. The latter removes those potentially annoying solitaire scenarios where there’s no solution. Personally, I think that’s all part of the fun – spending ages moving cards around before realizing you’re stumped.

Incidentally, Solitaire also offers hints, if you’re a bit rubbish.

What else do we have? There’s a left-handed mode for southpaws, which flips everything – including the settings along the bottom, the option to change the size of the card faces, and a whole bunch of stats.

The touch interface in Solitaire is freakin’ glorious. Games are lightning fast, as you can move stuff around with a simple tap, regardless of where the cards are going.

On that note, the Game Center achievements challenge you to finish a Solitaire round in 1:45 or less. I’m miles off. Ditto winning a game in 95 moves or less.  Those are just two of 25 achievements up for grabs.

And that's Solitaire for iOS. What more could you want?

Amusingly, I've just realised that I reviewed this particular version of Solitaire 15 months ago. If it eases the pain, consider the above a feature in the name of Why Solitaire is still the best solitaire app for iOS. Or something.

Pros

  • The touch controls
  • Customise cards and playing area
  • Winning Deals slider

Cons

  • Uhm… it’s quite addictive
