Meet Song Pop, essentially an audio music quiz wherein you can wow friends with your knowledge of - among others - Modern Rap, Love Songs, One Hit Wonders and Metal. What’s not to like?
Song Pop is strictly a two-player affair, but don’t worry if you’re an antisocial Facebook-loathing hermit; you can play with randoms if necessary.
Much like Draw Something, each turn in Song Pop (why do I keep typing “Sony Pop”?) is comprised of three parts. Behold:
1. View the results of the Song Pop challenge you laid down previously.
Ultimately, you've guessed five bands or song names as quickly as possible, and your opponent has done likewise. The one with the highest score – you guessed it – wins. Bonus points are awarded for consecutive answers.
2. Accept the Song Pop challenge sent by your opponent.
He or she has already guessed five songs or band names in a category of their choosing, and you’re tasked with beating their head in. Er, metaphorically.
Interestingly, you can see the answers your opponent chose in real-time, though you don’t know if they were correct or not till you select something. I can’t decide if seeing the answers is a good or bad thing.
For example, in theory, if you get the first question right while your opponent fluffs it, you can simply copy their answers for the rest of the round, and you pretty much can’t lose. But where’s the fun in that?
3. Set a new Song Pop challenge.
Choose from three music categories, and guess as quickly as possible.
Winning a round bags you three Song Pop coins, while the loser gets one. With coins, you can unlock new categories and buy gold notes that allow you to a) shuffle the categories when it’s your turn, and b) eliminate a couple of answers.
Song Pop is given some much-needed replay value with the ability to level up within music categories. Continually perform well in 90s Alternative, for example, and you’ll eventually unlock more songs. Good times.
And that’s Song Pop. Despite the fairly crummy presentation, it’s really quite endearing. Heck, any smartphone game that boasts little clips of Sonic Youth gets my vote.
- It’s fun
- Loads of songs and categories
- The leveling up thing
- Doesn’t look particularly hot
- The potential cheat I mentioned above
- The shop is a bit laggy
