I’ve written extensively about Sonic Dash, perhaps more than any sane man should, first in my Sonic Dash review, shortly thereafter in I want Knuckles! A quick rant about Sonic Dash, and most recently in Sonic Dash: to delete or not to delete.
Today, it’s time for a celebration, as I’ve finally – finally – unlocked all characters in Sonic Dash. Er, sort of.
Last week, someone asked: “Is there [a] quick way to unlock all Sonic Dash characters Tails, Knuckles, Amy on iPhone? Otehrwise [sic] seems it'll take months to get them!”
Yeah, that’s right enough, sonicdasher. The only way to unlock the additional characters in Sonic Dash is through good old-fashioned hard work. Dozens and dozens of hours of hard work.
To be fair, as I mentioned before, it used to be the case that you had to pay non-virtual cash for red star rings in order to afford Amy, Knuckles and Tails, but the game has been updated several times of late. You can occasionally find red star rings during runs, while there are loads up for grabs in daily challenges.
Incidentally, that’s how I unlocked Tails; by completing seven consecutive days of daily challenges. That’s, like, an hour or so of play. Easy!
More demanding was Knuckles, as he costs a whopping 60 red star rings. But by completing groups of missions (three red star rings at a time) and daily challenges (one in particular gives you 10 red star rings), he was soon (ahem) mine.
Was it all worth it? Well, I don’t feel quite as hollow as the time I found all 250 pigeons in GTA IV, though that necessitated keeping a colour-coded map on my MacBook with the paper map folded out across my coffee table. Insane.
But there is an argument to be made that I’ve wasted a good part of 2013, as Amy, Tails and Knuckles do, well, nothing; nothing that Sonic can’t do. Indeed, I could’ve just placed a Knuckles sticker on my iPad (over Sonic) and achieved the same effect.
Having said that, I’m tempted to soldier on and unlock Amy. I had her on my mobile, but lost her when I almost bricked my iPhone. Doing so would complete the set (alongside Sonic, Knuckles and Tails) on my iPad. Beautiful.
Also, the Sonic Dash global challenge (collectively run around the earth 100 times) is still underway, ending August 5. If we succeed, we get Shadow the Hedgehog, essentially a black skin for Sonic.
If you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some Sonic Dash to play…
