Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (v 2.0) iOS review

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (v 2.0) iOS review

This here outing marks the third side-scrolling Sonic joint I’ve reviewed, having previously checked out Sonic the Hedgehog version 2.0 and the frankly insane Sonic the Hedgehog CD.

Today I’m looking at Sonic the Hedgehog 2 version 2.0, a re-mastered version of one of the best games of all time. Huzzah!

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has actually been available on iOS for years now, but it’s come to prominence once again thanks to the re-mastering treatment, essentially bringing it in line with the re-mastered version of the original.

That means Sonic the Hedgehog 2 now offers enhanced graphics at 60fps, a full widescreen display, and a re-mastered soundtrack.

Better still, for the first time ever, you can explore the Hidden Palace Zone, which was included in the code for the Mega Drive original, but wasn’t actually playable.

More? How about the all-new Boss Attack Mode, which challenges you to – as the name suggests – blast through all the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 boss encounters as quickly as possible.

Even more? You might appreciate the ability to save your game. Previously, running out of lives/continues meant you had to start Sonic the Hedgehog 2 from the beginning. Now, in the worst case, you’re simply back to the beginning of the act. Still challenging as heck.

And as if all that wasn’t enough, you can also play as Knuckles from the get go, in the form of Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. In the old days, that necessitated shoving your copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 into the Sonic & Knuckles add-on cartridge.

Playing as Knuckles is surprisingly well balanced, incidentally. Yes, he can float and climb (accessing formerly-secret areas in the process), but he can’t jump as high as Sonic.

Ultimately, behind all that flashy stuff, lurks the same old glorious Sonic the Hedgehog 2, so you’ve got seven zones, three extra levels at the end, the iconic half-pipe bonus stages, and we’re meeting Miles “Tails” Prower for the first time.

All in all, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 version 2.0 is a fantastic offering, and it’s available on both the App Store and Google Play for a criminally low 69p.

Pros

  • It’s Sonic 2, man
  • Only 69p
  • All the re-mastering stuff

Cons

  • Nah
