It was almost a year ago to the day that the original Sony Xperia Z Ultra arrived, so one year on, we’re petulantly demanding: “Where’s the Sony Xperia Z2 Ultra at?”
“Right here, baby” is effectively the answer from our favourite Japanese manufacturer, with what appears to be the first official Sony Xperia Z2 Ultra teaser.
Adopting a phrase that’s really used far too often in the world of mobile, Sony has taken to its blog and social network outlets to purr: “Shh… do you want to know a secret? Stay tuned for the next big thing this season.”
To be fair, when Sony says “big”, it literally means big – as in a great big phablet-style smartphone. Er, probably.
Last year’s Sony Xperia Z Ultra essentially took the Xperia Z (the Xperia Z1 wasn’t yet a thing at that time, incidentally; there's no such thing as a Z1 Ultra), upped the processor, stretched the display to a colossal 6.4in, but toned down the camera to 8MP (compared to 13.1MP on the little fella).
It’s probably safe to assume the Sony Xperia Z2 Ultra will do much the same thing this summer: big display, faster processor, and a non-20.7MP rear camera.
For the record, Sony Xperia Z2 specs include a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, so we’re expecting the Xperia Z2 Ultra to come with the spanking new Qualcomm Snapdragon 805. Maybe.
It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out in terms of the Sony Xperia Z2 Ultra display size, too, as last year’s Xperia Z Ultra eventually became a Wi-Fi only small(ish) tablet. Did 6.4in prove too big for a phablet? Presumably Sony will answer that particular question in a matter of weeks.
