Sony casts doubt on Jelly Bean for 2011 Xperias

Sony casts doubt on Jelly Bean for 2011 XperiasSony pleased most of its smartphone user base when it served Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) to its entire 2011 Xperia range. Er, with the exception of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.

As such, Sony smartphone users had high hopes for an upgrade to Jelly Bean (Android 4.1), but those hopes have been somewhat dashed, thanks to a Facebook Q&A.

Ice Cream Sandwich was recently made available for the Xperia Arc and Arc S, Xperia Neo and Neo V, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia Pro, Xperia Active, Xperia Ray and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. Phew.

However, over on Facebook, Sony has revealed that the Xperia Arc S and Xperia mini pro won’t be upgraded to Jelly Bean.

The interesting thing there is that the Sony Xperia Arc S is the highest specced smartphone in the 2011 Xperia line-up. If it’s not getting Jelly Bean, it’s probably safe to assume the rest won’t either.

Needless to say, users were up in arms about being left behind within 18 months. Several people reposted the comment: "OK, I saw that 2011 Xperia phones won't receive Jelly Bean - how does that conform to 18-months support cycle?"

Not too surprising given the low internal memory on the arc s.
