There are a good few kitchen-related apps available for tablets, with the larger-screened form factor making it a more natural home for digital recipes and the like than your average smartphone.
But what about dedicated kitchen tablets? We caught sight of one a while back (the Archos ChefPad) and now we have this, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z: Kitchen Edition.
So what does this bespoke slab offer to earn its specialist title? From a tablet hardware point of view, not a whole lot. The Xperia Tablet Z is already splash-resistant, don't forget, so doesn't really need any tweaking to be a suitable kitchen companion.
What you do get extra, however, is a foldable stand for propping up your Tablet Z to make it easier to follow recipes on screen, and there's also a Bluetooth “iGrill”, a Bluetooth meat thermometer that'll report temperatures to a dedicated app up to 200 feet away.
Predictably, Sony has also pre-loaded the Kitchen Edition Xperia Tablet Z with all sorts of cooking-related apps including Evernote FooD for keeping records of your culinary creations, Juicing Recipes for all kinds of juicy ideas, Food Planner Pro to help put together meal plans, and Out of Milk Shopping List for your ingredient and shopping lists.
For all that, Sony is asking $650 in the US – that's a price bump of $50 over the conventional Xperia Tablet Z, which doesn't sound unreasonable to us.
It has yet to be confirmed whether Sony's Kitchen Edition tablet will make it to UK shores.
