Six outrageous claims that came to nothing – part 2

Last time, on Six outrageous claims that came to nothing, I looked at a trio of quotes pertaining to the HP TouchPad, Motorola’s Moto X, and Windows Phone’s smartphone market share.

Today I’m looking at a couple of conflicting quotes about the Samsung Galaxy S4, neither of which came to pass, while the sixth and final claim recalls a little partnership called Sony Ericsson.

Ice Cream Sandwich update for 2011 Xperias

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 22, 2012 at 12:00

There’s been a whole lot of confusion over Sony’s Android upgrade plans of late, but here’s some decidedly good news.

The 2011 Xperia range (er, other than the Xperia Play, of course) is about to be served a delicious hunk of Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.4).

Sony casts doubt on Jelly Bean for 2011 Xperias

Sony casts doubt on Jelly Bean for 2011 Xperias

Sony pleased most of its smartphone user base when it served Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) to its entire 2011 Xperia range. Er, with the exception of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.

As such, Sony smartphone users had high hopes for an upgrade to Jelly Bean (Android 4.1), but those hopes have been somewhat dashed, thanks to a Facebook Q&A.

Android ICS rolling out for 2011 Xperia lineup

Sony Ericsson may be no more, but if you bought an Xperia smartphone during 2011 then that's the name staring at you from your phone's sculpted face.

And as of today that face is getting a fresh new look, as Sony has confirmed the Android 4.0.4 update – aka Ice Cream Sandwich – is rolling out to the 2011 Xperias, starting it seems with the Xperia Arc and Xperia Neo.

No Ice Cream Sandwich for Sony Ericsson Xperia Play?

We’ve had Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) updates from Motorola and HTC this week, and now it’s Sony’s turn. Huzzah!

However, don’t get too excited if you’re rocking a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, as your name ain’t on the list.

Sony Xperia Play 2 with two 'slidably connected' sliding sliders? Nah, probably not

I was saying the other day that patent submissions quite often make for more interesting viewing than, like, actual stuff. Remember the story about the potential Microsoft phone with front and rear displays? Of course you do.

Now we’re hearing that Sony has had a patent approved for a decidedly Xperia Play-esque device with not one but two sliding thingies.

Sony’s grand Android plan: PlayStation Suite for all

Lewis Curdie  Apr. 12, 2012 at 11:30

Japanese manufacturer Sony, fresh from severing its Swedish friend, held an investor conference last night, detailing its plans to address a projected $6.4 billion loss over the fiscal year.

Essentially, Sony hopes to shove PlayStation Suite on as many Android handsets as possible, while cranking the number of games available from the PlayStation Store.

Xperia Ice Cream Sandwich pushed to mid-April (earliest), upgrade if you dare

Last November, Sony Ericsson confirmed it’d bring Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) to its entire 2011 Xperia range, and initial whispers pointed to March.

Now we’re hearing that the update has been pushed back to April, but – to be fair – there have been a few changes within the Sony camp of late, including taking a saw to its Swedish arm.

The best smartphones of 2011? Yes and no… part 1

The best smartphones of 2011? Yes and no… part 1

Lewis Curdie  Dec. 30, 2011 at 13:00

It’s around that time when publications are obliged to take a long hard look over the past year and ask: What were the best smartphones of 2011? Invariably, the resultant Top 5s will include the Samsung Galaxy S II and iPhone 4S, perhaps the Nokia N9 if they’re a particularly geeky lot, and maybe even a curveball in the form of the BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900.

Instead, I figured I’d compile each and every one of Mobot’s handset reviews from 2011 into one handy feature. Want to know what Dave thought of the Samsung Galaxy S II? Or what Emma said about the iPad 2? Read on!
