Sony to launch 20MP smartphone camera accessory?

Sony to launch 20MP smartphone camera accessory?Camera accessories aren’t exactly a new concept in the world of smartphones. Not content with releasing his own brand of terrible music on the world, recently launched a camera thingy for the iPhone – one that claimed to boost the megapixel count from 8 to 14.

On a similar note, we’re hearing that Sony is prepping a 20MP camera accessory for both smartphones and tablets.

That’s the word according to Sony Alpha Rumours, which in turn credits “two trusted sources”. They give their story an SR5 rating, which supposedly means “almost certainly correct”.

The accessory is described as a “lens with built-in sensor, battery and memory”, which transmits data to the host device via NFC (Near Field Communiction) and Wi-Fi.

Supposedly we should expect the same 20.2-megapixel Exmor R sensor and f/1.8 Carl Zeiss lens as the Sony RX100 II pocket camera. Furthermore, a second model will feature a smaller sensor and larger zoom.

No word on price for this 20MP Sony camera accessory just yet, but needless to say that’ll be crucial. I can’t help but feel that anyone that bothered about photography would’ve invested in a standalone camera anyway, but maybe Sony’s onto something. What do you think? Good idea?

Probably 10x the price of a good digital camera with much much better battery life. (plus, you don't look like a perv carrying it in your pocket)

Thing is... the Cameras on devices like the HTC ONE, Galaxy S4, iPhone 5... they're all brilliant already! More than enough for a smartphone. If you want to be a professional photographer you wouldn't use your smartphone for it. Unless that level of quality was already in the phone, you'd just use an actual camera, not some crappy ad-on.
