Oh my days! I'm really actually giggling to myself as I write this because I could have the following sentence saved on my clipboard and just paste it, since I seem to write it so much: Sony's launching another Xperia handset.
Cue lots of whooping, false smiles and feigned enjoyment at this news.
Ok, here's the facts. It'll be called the Xperia J and has - bizarrely - been leaked by none other than the Indonesian IT ministry. Yep.
It's looking like a fairly pedestrian device, all things considered. When I say 'pedestrian', I mean mid-range rather than rubbish. Rocking a 1GHz single-core processor, touchscreen with resolution of 480 x 854 and Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4.
And that's really all we "know" so far (don't forget this is based on a leak rather than any kind of official announcement).
I can't help wondering, though, if Sony is just going through the motions here and aiming to launch an Xperia handset for every letter of the alphabet. Because this is getting a bit ridiculous. Not that we expect Sony to be avid readers of this site - but we have lamented them so much in recent months for flooding the market with handsets that are almost identical.
This is where Apple has strength. You have an iPhone 3GS, an iPhone4 and an iPhone 4S. Simples. Same with the iPad. You can buy an iPad2 or iPad 3. And you know what you're getting. Can anyone here - hand on heart - off the top of their head tell the difference between a Sony Xperia P, an Xperia J, an Xperia Go and and an Xperia S, for argument's sake.
BlackBerry flooded the market with so many handsets that could have all been combined into one. So did HTC. Both are nowhere near the position they were in a few years ago. Take heed Sony and slow it down.
