Sony Odin: 5in 1080p screen, quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM?

Sony Odin: 5in 1080p screen, quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM?You may recall us musing last week over the Sony Odin, supposedly the next Xperia flagship that's due to touch down sometime in the new year.

Well now we can add a bit of substance to the rumour with what is claimed to be the next-gen Sony powerhouse's official spec.

We have the Xperia thread on the Esato Forums to thank for the latest rumours, which add to the User Agent Profile info that emerged last week to create an increasingly clear image of what Sony has in mind for its next generation Xperia flagship.

That's if any of it is true, of course, but let's assume it is for the time being until given good reason to think otherwise.

We're apparently talking a 5in 1080p display, a quad-core S4 Pro processor and a full 2GB of RAM. It's certainly a tantalising prospect, and if it is accurate then Sony will finally have caught up that half-step it always seems to be trailing the leading Android OEMs by.

Then again, it all depends on when the Odin actually launches. That spec might look good right now, but if the handset itself only appears in March or April, then it won't look nearly as special.

The suggestion is that Sony will officially announce the Odin at CES 2013 in Las Vegas in January – which seems plausible considering Sony has often launched new mobile hardware at the US event in the past rather than wait for Mobile World Congress a month later.

But that's not all – alongside rumours of the 5in Odin comes whispers that the same device might be offered in an even bigger 6in configuration, raising the “phablet” concept to ridiculous new heights – at least until Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 comes along with a 6.2in display or something.

Hm...
I don't understand Sony - like: what on earth is the 'T' supposed to be?
This Odin will probably come out in 2014. Followed by the Odin S a month later etc

"6 inch" phablet? No way, that's a small tablet. Or Stablet, if you will.

@jaybear88 - "a small tablet" is 5"-7" and an average sized tablet is 9.5"-10.5" so Samsungs current 'Galaxy Note' series are just as much small tablets as this Odin will be.

@Janst - I don't understand why you're confused. Sony have used letters to name their flagships and words to name their other devices. For example:
Xperia S - released as flagship
Xperia P - mid-range flagship
Xperia U - budget mid-range flagship
Xperia T - end of year flagship
Xperia V - waterproof flagship
Xperia J - budget flagship

Xperia Sola - based on Xperia U
Xperia Go - upgrade from the Xperia Active
Xperia Acro S - Waterproof based on the Xperia S
Xperia Miro - budget social network phone
Xperia Tipo - 'the budget phone'

The Xperias with lettered names are the ones that Sony will advertise as much as possible. The Xperias with names are the ones that are sort of on their own and that have to rely on phone shops advertising them. The Xperia Tipo, Xperia Sola and Xperia Go sell themselves with their USP's, but the lettered devices are backed up massively by Sony's advertisement campaigns. Simples. ;)

Oh and to anyone complaining that Sony are releasing too many devices - Sony only bought out Ericsson's share in the joint venture in January. They have released so many devices this year to create their own range of smartphones, they don't exactly want Sony Ericsson phones to be outselling their current phones now do they? So next year, I guarantee, they won't release half the amount of phones as they did this year. So just be thankful that the confusion is over :P

Sir Danothy,
I'm not confused by the alphabet. I'm confused by the T's 'flagship' position.

More the S4, I reckon - seeing the Note 2 is already way past 5 inches.
But well spotted :)

Eagles are jealous of my eyes. The note 2 is v impressive. 6 inches is just too big to fit in a pocket unless you wear cargo pants all the time, or maybe a fannypack...
