Sony Xperia A2 is go in Japan, oddly identical to Xperia Z1 f

Sony Xperia A2 is go in Japan, oddly identical to Xperia Z1 fLast year, Japan’s Sony Xperia Z1 f gave us a taste of what to expect from the Xperia Z1 Compact, and we figured it’d be a similar story this year with the Sony Xperia A2 and the inevitable Xperia Z2 Compact.

Well, the Sony Xperia A2 is now official in the Land of the Rising Sun, but somewhat confusingly, it’s nigh on identical to 2013’s miniatures.

The Sony Xperia Z1 f and Compact proved that you could fit flagship-level specs in a pocket-friendly phone, with a 4.3in 720p display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 20.7MP rear camera.

Fast-forward a year, and the Sony Xperia A2 boasts a 4.3in 720p display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 20.7MP rear camera. Wait a minute…

Really the only difference is in the dimensions, though admittedly we quite like the Sony Xperia A2 in orange and lavender. Interesting!

For those following smartphone spec sheets closely, you might’ve been expecting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, 3GB of RAM and 4K video recording from the Sony Xperia A2 (as found on the larger Sony Xperia Z2), but all three are mysteriously absent.

It remains to be seen what the Sony Xperia Z2 Compact has in store, but we won’t get our hopes up for anything other than a slight rethink of the Xperia Z1 Compact. But hey, if it comes in lavender and orange, we won’t be complaining!

I fairness to Sony, the Z1 f was only released towards the end of 2013, and the Z1 Compact has only been available for the last two months. We aren't really fast forwarding a year.

The intention is probably to make it look more like the full-fat Z2 for consistency.
