Would the Sony Xperia Z realistically smash if you dropped it?

Would the Sony Xperia Z's rear realistically smash if you dropped it since its made of glass? Or is it reinforced somehow?

One of the demo activities that they did when it was first announced, as well as drop it in a jug of water, was to drop it from head height onto a solid floor. There wasn't any damage then, but even reinforced glass can smash or at least chip depending on the hardness and terrain of the floor you drop it on...put it this way, I haven't tested out the waterproofness yet and I'm doing my best not to test how shatterproof it is either ;)

I would say yes. A lot of phones use Gorilla Glass now or some similar form of toughened glass and in all tests and experiments that the manufacturers show they'd have you believe it's indestructable. But in the real world if you drop your phone it'll likely shatter/crack the glass in a lot of situations, there isn't a phone yet that's been immune to this. If you're lucky it might just survive a drop but I think your chances are slim with any phone.

There's hardly a day when I don't see an SGS3 , 4 or iPhone or or or with a cracked screen.

If you're lucky and your Z lands flat on its back, it'll probably survive. But we know, outside the lab they always land on a corner first.

Glass will always break and it's very unlikely that there is going to be one in the near future that doesn't. If you want glass to be shatter proof it would have to be plastic.
I suggest you do not try it.

Buy a Nexus 4. I have never dropped a mobile as much as I do this but it just bounces back in one piece.

If it smashed, it would be quite realistic - almost as if it were happening in front of your eyes, you wouldn't be left disappointed thinking they could've spent more on the cgi.
