Having been spoilt with Nokia's free sat-nav for life is there a similiar with Android without the data roaming charges?

Skobbler - downloads maps and just uses GPS. Not tried it though as I always use Google Navigation

yes and no. Nokia's maps app, the regular updates, the convenience of storing entire continents and detailled city maps on your phone is unrivalled. There are similar apps but without Nokia's mighty resources and experience they all stink in comparison.
The latest version of google maps caches more chunks of already downloaded maps - so if you scroll back and forth you don't download the same stuff again and again. But that is little progress compared to really storing the maps on your device.
I paid 60 bucks for iPhone apps that promised to deliver what OviMaps does - stinkers, too. :p
Nokia struck a deal last year with Yahoo to bring Ovi's maps to non-Nokians,but what exactly that will look like and when...anyone's guess.
