New Star Soccer iOS review

New Star Soccer iOS reviewNew Star Soccer was recommended by a friend as “the best mobile game ever”, so it has a fair bit to live up to. Better than Infinity Blade 2? Better than Angry Birds? Better than, uhm, Draw Something?

Well, perhaps if you’re a football fiend, yes. See, if you’ve been craving a Championship Manager-style game for your smartphone or tablet, your prayers have been answered.

What’s the dealio? In New Star Soccer, you control a young buck, and the aim is to take him all the way from the little leagues to the big time - complete with national squad glory.

However, there’s not a whole lot of football going on in New Star Soccer. Instead, the matches largely play out in text: “The linesman flags for offside,” “The shot is blocked,” that kinda thing.

There is the occasional spot of soccer action, with the opportunity to intercept passes, pass the ball, or shoot, but that’s your lot. Not that that’s a bad thing, necessarily.

The meat of New Star Soccer is in the RPG-esque stuff. The main thing you have to manage is your energy. You can invest it in training and enhancing attributes, but too much will leave you knackered and unable to play.

You can replenish your energy with energy drinks, bought with the currency you earn from playing. At the end of each match, you get a basic salary, a goal-scoring bonus, and sponsor money. When you move to new clubs, you can negotiate on the first two. Lovely.

There’s loads more to New Star Soccer. You have to keep your team, fans, boss and girlfriend happy (occasionally there’s a “dilemma” where you can only please one of the four).

You can also invest in skill-enhancing football boots, vehicles, properties, and lifestyle items such as phones and suits. Looking good ensures you make a good impression on the ladies. For serious.

There’s also gambling in New Star Soccer, in the form of Blackjack,  Roulette, Slots and Horse Racing. A fun distraction, and a good way to make money. Or, more realistically, lose it all.

Phew. I still feel like I’m just scratching the surface of New Star Soccer; there’s a silly amount of stuff going on. But I figure you’ll know by now if it’s up your street or not.

New Star Soccer’s Arcade Mode is free, as are the first 10 matches in career mode. Progression demands 69p, but I can’t see many people begrudging such a small fee.

For my money, New Star Soccer is easily one of the most addictive games on the App Store. As for one of the “best”? You decide.

  • Super addictive
  • Loooaaads to do
  • Free Arcade mode

  • Minimal audio
  • Basic graphics
  • Matches can feel random

Summary: New Star Soccer is a highly addictive soccer career RPG type thing.

Developer: New Star Games

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.

Price: free @ App Store
