Another appropriate name for this feature might be An impromptu rant about Samsung and its many Galaxy smartphones. Yes, I’m in full rant mode, I’ve just had a cup of coffee, and I’ve absolutely no idea where I’m going with this. You’ve been warned.
If there’s one phrase we’re absolutely sick of hearing this week, it’s “the next Galaxy”. It was specifically rammed home during that “take the next step” nonsense on Monday, where peeps were forced to veeeery sloooowly rearrange the letters as the site melted. Yes, we get it. It’s the next freakin’ Galaxy.
It all started a few weeks ago when Sammo sent out the invite for the phone we all assumed would be called the Samsung Galaxy S III. Said invite simply referred to, yes, “the next Galaxy”, leading some to question if it was indeed an invite to meet the Galaxy S II’s successor or another device altogether.
Or maybe it is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S II but it’ll have an entirely new name. That really got the rusty old gears in my noggin turning, slowly but surely.
If it is the Galaxy S III (in name, I mean), why the heck hasn’t Sammo said so? It’s not exactly an industry secret that there’ll be a sequel to one of the most successful smartphones of all time. You could also argue that referring to it as “the next Galaxy” makes little to no sense whatsoever. Heck, that’s exactly what I’m about to do.
The next Galaxy after what, Samsung? There have been approximately 647 new Galaxy devices since the Samsung Galaxy S II was unveiled at Mobile World Congress way back in February 2011.
How about the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the new Samsung Galaxy Tabs (all 27 of ‘em), the Samsung Galaxy Y, the Samsung Galaxy Note, the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus and Ace 2… The list is endless. Ok, maybe not endless, but you get the idea.
Amusingly, this thing we’re set to meet next week isn’t even the next Galaxy S after the S II, as we’ve had both the Samsung Galaxy S Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S Advance. Incroyable!
If it’s not called the Samsung Galaxy S III, what might it be? Well, you might remember a few weeks ago we heard that Samsung had popped down to the United States Patent and Trademark Office and registered three new names.
What were those three names? The Galaxy Grand, Galaxy Premier and Galaxy Next. I’m thinking Samsung would’ve thrown in some “grand entrance” teasing if it’s the Galaxy Grand. I guess Galaxy Premier ain’t too bad, but… nah.
As for Galaxy Next, well it’d kinda make sense since all we’ve been hearing for what feels like years is “the next Galaxy”. The only problem with that is: the Samsung Galaxy Next is already available in some markets. It’s what we in the west call the Samsung Galaxy mini.
Interestingly, I’ve just heard that senior VP Robert Yi apparently gave the name away during Samsung’s Q1 earnings call. Ready for this? "We are anticipating very strong demand of Galaxy S III.” Or maybe that was a cheeky red herring.
In any case, if all this “the next Galaxy” stuff has been for nothing, I will punch you in the crown jewels so hard, Samsung.
The Samsung Galaxy S III or "next Galaxy" (or Galaxy Grand or Galaxy Premier or Galaxy Next) launch event takes place in London, next Thursday.
