Suggested Improvements to Mobot for its 1 year Anniversary

As the regular users will know, Mobot isn't perfect (nearly, but not quite :p). It's grown a lot over the past twelve months and it's somewhat outgrown a few of its current features and also has some bugs that have remained throughout the year.

Me and Jan (one of the Moderators, for any newbies), thought that a thread where we could collect together all suggested improvements and bug reports, would be a good idea. This way the site developers will have a far better idea of exactly what the users would like to see and what bugs pop up in everyday use.

Thanks in advance for your input and suggestions guys :).

PLEASE NOTE: This thread is relating to the site itself, not the content that's published on the site. If you want to b*tch about that, I don't want to hear it. Go away.

(Mod Edit: Thanks matty, excellent idea!

Please, everyone, keep to the topic.
-> Indicate whether you are talking about the MOBILE SITE or the Desktop VERSION!!!

-> Keep it real!!! The priority is improving on WHAT IS! Then we can talk about additional features.

Matt EDIT: All my comments refer to the desktop site, I never use the mobile version. Easier to write it here than in every comment.

Matt EDIT No.2: I'm going to look at this thread for about a week, next weekend (28th/29th Jan), I'll collect together all of the (sensible) suggestions that we receive over the course of this week, compile them into some kind of easy to read and understand report and email it to Mobot. Then they'll have an official record of what us, the site users, would like to see change. Once again, your inputs are much appreciated :).

DOUBLE POST BUG :p. Thought I'd get in first with that one. It's been here since the site began and seems to randomly come and go as it pleases. Very odd.

1) Notification window is finicky on touchscreen phones, sometimes you end up clicking a link or advert underneath the notification window.
2) Sticky threads for frequently asked questions.
3) Where's the Nokia 3310 and 8310 in the phone finder?! :p

matt101101 / MOD  Jan. 22, 2012 at 14:25

1) Notifications don't work properly when the thread is 2+ pages long, clicking on the notification takes you to page one, not the last page of the thread where whatever you wanted to read is located.

2) Sticky threads, the same questions get asked all the time by people who're too lazy to use the search bar.

3) Private messages (HUKD has them and I know this site is closely related to HUKD).

4) At the top of the page where there's the options: Blog, Phones, Networks and Platforms. Can we have a development section, please? Especially as you now employ Liwen to write about development related issues/news.

5) Page selection at the top as well as the bottom of multi-page threads.

I think I've finished being demanding....for now :p.

Please read 1st post ;)

On mobile site the phone threads do not show what phones the OPs are talking about. So, unles they mention their handset model, one doesn't know... And I end up having to switch to the Desktop version, which completely defeats the purpose of the mobile website.

NO-tifications - as mentioned already, the Notification system, as is, is so broken, it'd be better NOT to have it.
On both the Desktop- and the Mobile site, I get totally random notifications. If any...

It'd be better to have notification tabs => "last 24 hrs", "hot", "new threads"... along those lines. To get random listings of 5 or 6 posts, when in fact there are dozens more is bad.

Multi-page threads => one should be able to jump to a specific page. Next and previous are not good enough. Yes, I know one can just edit the page in the thread's URL, but how many newbs will notice?

What was that you were saying earlier about the double post bug not affecting you any more :p?

Oh and I thought of another possible improvement, I really like the useful answer feature it works well and surprisingly is rarely abused. The only change I'd make is stopping people favourating their own answers, there's no need to ever favourite your own answer, it's an easily avoidable abuse of the system.

big one... A FAQ PAGE... seriously how many repeat questions could be answered on one single faq area? (preferably one that say people with over 1000 comments can moderate to prevent a wikipedia type thing)

a dedicated discussion area on rumours etc... more often than not we find out about new phones before you guys so having an area off the questions board to talk about rumours etc would be shexy...

lastly... most new phones are smart phones so wheres the dedicated application part? that would be useful especially if you could break it down to android ios wp bada etc.

JanSt / MOD  Jan. 22, 2012 at 16:25

Thanks, Treab - shexy stuff, indeed ;)

Treab  Jan. 22, 2012 at 16:36

Also a new mod ;)

JanSt / MOD  Jan. 22, 2012 at 16:39

Also a new mod ;)
Agreed ;)

Treab  Jan. 22, 2012 at 16:45

i mean the old one is obviously passed it :p

matt101101 / MOD  Jan. 22, 2012 at 16:48

You two, on topic please. For once lets keep a thread on topic, especially as this one's beneficial to all of us :)

Treab  Jan. 22, 2012 at 16:55

Also. Mobile version. we need numbers of pages below... even on full site we can jump to the last page the mobile version needs to go through every single page... which if you can remember the redemption thread me and matt pushed to 17 odd pages was a nightmare to navigate...

JanSt / MOD  Jan. 22, 2012 at 17:31

Treab, yep - I mentioned that earlier. At the month' the easy thing is to look at the browser's address bar. A thread on, say, page 3 will have a Url that ends in "3". If you wanna jump to page 8, you can just edit the URL to "....8" - but that is decidedly not shexy. Page numbers bot at the top and the bottom are better.

Search search search... In absence of an FAQ and or stickies for repeat question, we should at least have a search that indexes everything.

matt101101 / MOD  Jan. 22, 2012 at 17:31

What does the search currently actually search for?

Treab  Jan. 22, 2012 at 17:55

Search search search... In absence of an FAQ and or stickies for repeat question, we should at least have a search that indexes everything.

true but the search bar is annoying... a simple to read faq or common questions broken down by say

apple iphone

(mainly the common ones... obviously we cant cover everything and everyphone but the major ones... just so people know where to look and if their answer isnt their maybe a questions box underneath which allows people who do know to answer...

I've written the main part report/letter to Anyone who wishes to see it is welcome to a copy on request, I'll happily email it to you (it's written in Word 2007 .docx format). I can add more suggestions to it as they roll in, though I think we've covered a large chunk of the common issues today.

Jan, on a side note, could you please provide me with an email address that can be used to contact Mobot? The email link in your "Contact Us", section seems to be broken for me. Thanks in advance.
