I hate supermarkets. I hate the queues, the sprawling aisles, the surly staff and the sheer amount of time it takes to actually buy anything... but you can trust games to turn a hateful chore into a fun new virtual obsession. The original Supermarket Mania proved that running a shop can be a frantic and rewarding experience, and the sequel offers, well, more of the same.
In case you're unaware of the premise, let me explain what Supermarket Mania 2 is all about. As Nikki, the heroine of the original game, you've been tasked with running a new franchise of shops and malls in a brand new city. To do so, you'll need to tap on counters to refill them, tap on the mop to clean the store and ensure that customers can buy the products they want and eventually pay for them. This may sound simple, but multiple shoppers with different desires soon turn the experience into a pulse-pounding test of reflexes and skill. Coffee is a must.
If customers get aggravated or have to wait too long to pay, they'll angrily storm out; resulting in lost sales and lower scores. You'll have to stay alert to avoid turning your store into a retail distaster!
The touchscreen controls are simple, effective and accessible - allowing you to cancel or undo orders if you need to quickly adjust to a new customer. The visuals are also extremely crisp and detailed, yet functional enough to ensure that you never lose sight of a customer's needs. Both the iPhone and iPad versions look excellent, and the extra screen space on the tablet is a serious advantage.
Here's the thing, though. Supermarket Mania 2 is practically unchanged from its predecessor, and features very little variety between levels. If you're new to the franchise then the sequel is probably the best place to start, but otherwise, be aware that you're getting very little in the way of innovation or new content for your money.
- Addictive, accessible gameplay
- Becomes a deep and frantic challenge
- Crisp visuals and responsive controls
- Lack of variety and innovation
- What's new?
Summary: Supermarket Mania 2 is slick, addictive and great fun if you have fast enough reflexes to handle it. Lack of innovation aside, this superior sequel is well worth your time and money.
