Keeping with the mixed bag theme, Tentacle Wars is nothing like any of the aforementioned, but it is really very good.
Hmm, how do I explain the mechanics in Tentacle Wars? To be honest, I’m not entirely sure I understand how it works, but I have – somehow – blasted my way through most of the levels.
Okay, so, each level in Tentacle Wars is comprised of a bunch of cells. There is some sort of back-story involving saving an alien race, but we might as well be inside a tiger for all that matters.
Anyway, you control the green cells, and the aim is to occupy all the cells in the level. Standing in your way are blue, red and super-smart purple cells. A star rating system is applied, taking into account how many moves and how long you took to finish.
Each cell has a number denoting its current strength, alongside an indication of how many tentacles it can fire out. With said tentacles, you want to reach out and take over neutral grey cells, and enemy (red/green/purple) cells.
Needless to say you can only take over weaker cells, but it’s more complicated than that when there are countless tentacles and multiple colours in play.
And, er, that’s Tentacle Wars in a nutshell. I really struggled with it at first, despite having played the tutorial (twice), but it’s falling into place now. Mostly.
Including the recent update (we’re on version 2.0 now), there are 80 Tentacle Wars levels, split across four level packs.
In particular, the second pack introduces the notion of the super-smart purple cell, while the third is mostly concerned with cells that don’t have tentacles, but can move to absorb other cells.
Fancy it? Tentacle Wars is currently free for iPhone, while the HD version for iPad is down to 69p. They’re usually 69p and £1.99 respectively. Check it.
- 80 levels
- A few wee twists, such as absorption
- Oddly addictive
- Tough as heck
- The tutorial could be more thorough
- Quite samey
