Seven of the best UK SIM only deals

Occasionally, the best way to grab a new phone – if you have the bucks lying around – is to buy the thing outright (‘SIM free’) and grab a tariff that simply gives you a SIM card and a monthly allowance (‘SIM only’). Or maybe your contract is up and you’re looking for the most cost effective way to keep your current phone in action before upgrading.

In either case, we’re looking at seven of the best UK SIM only deals at present, essentially one for each of the Big Four (Three, O2, Vodafone, EE), plus three MVNOs (mobile virtual network operators). Ready? Go!

EDIT: Be sure to check out our new feature Best UK SIM only deals. We've highlighted some of the best tariffs, and listed more than 100 UK SIM only offerings.

Free 4G for Tesco Mobile PAYG customers

Lewis Curdie  Jul. 26, 2014 at 14:30

Everyone loves a freebie, and MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) Tesco Mobile, which uses the O2 network, has a beauty to see out the week.

Its PAYG customers – old and new – with 4G-ready handsets can now receive 4G speeds at no additional cost.

Tesco Mobile now offering 4G for £2.50PM

Lewis Curdie  Oct. 18, 2013 at 12:00

With O2 recently rolling out its 4G service, it stands to reason that Tesco Mobile, an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) piggybacking Big Blue, wouldn’t be far behind.

Indeed, Tesco Mobile has delivered, and its 4G weighs in at just £2.50 per month for pay monthly and SIM only customers.

Tesco’s £130 Android tablet dropping before Christmas?

Tesco’s £130 Android tablet dropping before Christmas?

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 19, 2013 at 16:30

If I had just 50p for each and every Android tablet manufacturer out there, I’d be a very rich man indeed.

Possibly adding to the burgeoning list is colossal retailer Tesco, which is tipped to release an “iPad-like” tablet (ahem) in time for Christmas.

Why I quite like the @tescomobile twitter thing

Why I quite like the @tescomobile twitter thing

One of the things that really gets my proverbial goat – in addition to terrible grammar (knowing your sh*t versus knowing you’re sh*t) and poor UI design (having studied it at uni for a while) – is poor customer service.

With that in mind, it pleases me to learn that Tesco has set up a twitter account, @tescomobile, where all the usual rigid customer service rules are thrown out the window.

O2’s £10m pledge to rebuild trust, avoid third outage

O2’s £10m pledge to rebuild trust, avoid third outage

Lewis Curdie  Oct. 18, 2012 at 18:00

Telefonica O2 regularly comes out bottom (in the good way) when it comes to customer complaints, however it’s suffered two significant setbacks this year with a pair of major network faults, leaving millions without service on both occasions.

O2 is now promising to invest £10 million to ensure its customers aren’t hit with a third service outage.

O2 network problems: millions unable to call, text or use data. Again. UPDATE: It's resolved! Eh, sort of...

Almost four months ago to the day, millions of O2 – and by extension Tesco Mobile and giffgaff – customers were left without service, be it calls, texts or data.

Fast-forward four months and it’s “déjà vu all over again”, as millions of customers on the O2 network have been left paralysed. Er, not literally.

Survey: A third of O2 customers want to leave following outage

Lewis Curdie  Jul. 18, 2012 at 11:00

If you have eyes and/or ears, you couldn’t help but see and/or hear about the O2 network outage last week. It was all over the telebox, newspapers, the cyberweb, and wireless radio.

A subsequent survey suggests that a third of O2 customers are so furious that they wish to leave as soon as possible.

O2 confirms partial restoration of service

Lewis Curdie  Jul. 12, 2012 at 11:30

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past 24 hours or so, you’ll know that O2 – and by extension giffgaff and Tesco Mobile – suffered loss of service yesterday and through the night, including calls, texts, and data. Oh dear.

However, as of 10am this morning, O2 has confirmed that its service is back up and running. Mostly.

Tesco puts iPad on sale at £49.99. Oops!

Phil Lavelle  Mar. 14, 2012 at 20:00

They do say 'Every Little Helps' but maybe Tesco wasn't referring to publicity after this pretty embarrassing blunder.

The supermarket's popular website got hit with an unexpected amount of traffic after accidentally putting the latest iPad up for sale around £600 cheaper than Apple themselves.
