Are third-party/unofficial mobile chargers dangerous?

Caught part of a program on BBC this morning (Fake Britain I think) that suggested third-party mobile chargers might explode? What are the chances - one in a billion??

Probably lower than 1/1,000,000,000 but I've never had it happen to me or anyone I know. That's a lot of chargers over the years...

A relative had multiple "compatible" laptop chargers explode (not violently, luckily) that were purchased from sellers on ebay.

I'm unsure as to the extent of the real problem, but I think I may have watched the same program as you not too long ago. The issue about the pins on the plug being too short, as well as the absence of fuses in some products (or not being wired in, despite being present!) is very real.

Your chance is probably close to 1 in a million IF you buy safety checked devices. If you buy dodgy chargers, dodgy batteries etc. Then the probability that your charger will explode is much higher, simply as it hasn't gone through as stringent safety checks as the others.
