TI teases all-day battery action

TI teases all-day battery actionTexas Instruments’ Brian Carlson has been speaking to Fudzilla about the potential for true all-day battery action.

The OMAP 5 chip is expected to land in autumn 2012, but TI is already looking to the future. A future where you can use your smartphone or tablet all freakin’ day long. Oh yes.

Specifically, Brian reckons you’ll be able to use your device from the moment you wake up till the moment your head hits the pillow. That’d be nice. At present, it’s all too easy to run out of juice before the sun sets.

And how will we get there? Future chips and hardware improvements could introduce better memory access and intelligent caching, with devices going to sleep more often, shutting down automatically, and waking up faster.

Over in battery land, it looks like lithium ion as far as the eye can see. Bah.

It's amazing to think that the OMAP 5 series could theoretically give my 2 year old MacBook Pro a run for its money. Makes me more and more excited about the prospect of fully-featured tablets with simplified UIs when you just want to surf the web etc. and then whip out the big guns when you need to say encode a video. Cannot wait for Windows 8 and then the inevitable Apple riposte :D
