Tim Cook: OLED displays are ‘awful’

Tim Cook: OLED displays are ‘awful’This one is up there with Ballmer touting baldness as the World’s Coolest Haircut and Stephen Elop thinking that Canada has the best national anthem in the history of national anthems.

We’re hearing that Apple CEO Tim Cook really doesn’t like OLED displays. Quelle surprise, as the French say.

That’s the story according to CNET, and some words relayed from an investor conference. Indeed, Cook described OLED as “awful”.

OLED appears in a number of different smartphones, including the Nokia Lumia 820, but we can’t help but feel that Cook’s words are primarily aimed at the Samsung Galaxy S III and its Super AMOLED set-up.

"If you ever buy anything online and really want to know what the color is, as many people do, you should really think twice before you depend on the color from an OLED display," growled Cook.

Needless to say, Timothy thinks Apple’s Retina display is the best thing ever.

Screen technology preference can be quite a subjective thing, but hey, I love my PS Vita’s 5in OLED display.

One thing I do agree with is Tim’s cynicism regarding the spec race, with a huge influx of quad-core 5in 1080p devices. Cook reckons the primary focus should be to "create an amazing experience." Hear hear.

He says the same sort of nonsense but without the charisma..

I agree though on the OLED point. I'm not a fan.
I'll be honest: I rather surf te webz on the old HD2 than on any Samsung. There! Matt, bite me.

There is no difference anymore between the two - both are very good. I don't think anyone cares about color precision. It's not like red looks blue, red hues are slightly different.
Same with high quality TN vs. IPS panel, if you don't care about color precision there is no noticeable difference.

The other day I saw an image of a tomato on a retina screen and it was so life-like I went to grab it and broke my iPad. Give me a rubbish OLED screen where a tomato looks like a giraffe any day.

If CEOs and their underminnions* spent less time bitching about competitors and more time concentrating on releasing a great end-product, the world would be a least 42% better. FACT.

*Not a word, apparently. It should be. Furthermore I am not singling out Jobs 2.0, they are all at it. Sell the benefits of your own stuff, people - market in a positive fashion, etc.

Well, no need to believe me, but I do. It's the visual equivalent of artificial sweetener. I can 'taste' it against the wind. I don't like it. Is it a dealbreaker? Not really. Do I prefer the iPhone's screen? Absolutely.

Tim cook is a ****
unlike all other corporate billionaire sock puppets. Oooh yeah...

barrybarryk  Feb. 14, 2013 at 11:27

He's only saying that because whatever budget iPhone they're working obviously doesn't have one, and he's hardly one to talk about ridiculous resolutions. The eejit sells a laptop with a display res of 2880x1800, so high they have to scale up lower resolution presets just to make screen usable, Talk about pointless tech

JanSt / MOD  Feb. 14, 2013 at 18:29

With you on the Retina MacBooks - unless you develop Retina iPad apps it's a bit pointless

Old tech lcd is far inferior to oled the only reason cook spouts this is because apple can't source amoled screens

Talk down oled so they can sell cheap ass lg lcd's at a premium

I have 2 Phones with Samsung Oled Displays and they are 10x better than my lcd devices

JanSt / MOD  Feb. 15, 2013 at 07:04

10x? I'd say 9.6 at best...

Pondlife  Feb. 15, 2013 at 13:32

Maybe they have very bad lcd devices ;)

SomeInternetDude  Feb. 17, 2013 at 01:13

Well now that Samsung has cut them off of OLEDs and the up coming bendable screens what else do you expect Cook to say. I feel for him, must suck to watch your company going down the tubes.

Android rules.

JanSt / MOD  Feb. 17, 2013 at 10:07

There were OLED screens before the first iPhone... ***yawn***

Yes seriously ... you won't ever be buying a new amoled TV then will you stay with old LCD tech will you? or wait for the eyeball branded apple TV,

JanSt / MOD  Feb. 17, 2013 at 13:24

How did we get to TVs? And how did your comment get so muddled that you utterly failed to prove that Apple wouldn't be able to get OLED screens?
I think we're done here. Apple sucks, Android rules and Samsung can't do wrong ... Yawn.
I'll never forgot where I was when my horizon was broadened.
