have been told by o2 that I need to cancel my bt internet e-mail account and re set it as my phone keeps saying unable to connect to server. how do I do this

In Settings => Accounts => delete the BT email account. Then, purely out of superstition, reboot the phone. Then go back to Settings => Accounts (or the email app) and add the BT account.
Try these settings if the automatically retrieved ones fail:

INCOMING SERVER



pop3= mail.btinternet.com

security = SSL (accept all certificates)

port = 995





OUTGOING SERVER



SMTP server = smtp.mail.yahoo.com

security = SSL

port = 465

require sign in (tick the box)
