It's all in the name. At least that's what Toshiba will be hoping since it's called its new Android tablet the Excite.
The rather fatter Toshiba Thrive will no longer do that (thrive) if this sells in the numbers Toshiba is hoping - and it's going for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1's mantle here with a dual-core 1.2GHz Texas Instruments OMAP4 processor and even a 10.1-inch display rocking a 1280 x 800 resolution.
Camera-wise, there are two inclusions (5MP on the back and 2MP upfront) and internal memories of 16GB or 32GB depending on the depth of your pockets. This memory can always be extended by way of a MicroSD slot (in your face, iPad!) and has the added bonus of a mini-HDMI-out port.
The brains behind this have a Honeycomb flavour which would be kinda excusable if the Excite was launching now - but not for something that's still months away. We'd have loved to have seen Ice Cream Sandwich as a major selling point to make the Excite stand out. Sadly, there's no mention of it on Toshiba's launch page.
The Excite won't be on sale until February which we can't help thinking is a bit of a poor show by Toshiba. Has it forgotten that now is the lucrative Christmas shopping period yet February is the time we tend to have very little cash?
