I put forward the Ericsson R380 - 2000
Possibly not the first but it was a smartphone with a huge touch screen (at the time). The keypad came off so the front of the phone was just the screen like today's (in fact the keypad just poked through bits of plastic to touch the screen). It had a couple of buttons around the side for volume.
I miss my R380. Fun times.. Massive batteries.
